Five years after opening its doors, the Knights officially changed the company’s name to “Fruit of the Loom” as a biblically inspired play on the phrase “Fruit of the Womb” — found in Psalm 127: 3 of the Bible. Also around that time, the brothers visited a merchant friend named Rufas Skeel in Providence, Rhode Island. 1856: Fruit of the Loom becomes the new name of the brand Many of us never realized that Fruit of the Loom wasn’t the official name of the brand when it was founded, but that was the case. This company name was inspired by a friend and customer of Robert Knight, Rufus. Rufus’ daughter was an avid painter and she often painted fruit labels.

I didn’t know that the logo was a Mandela. I do screen printing, and my supplier stopped carrying fruit of the loom shirts around 5-6 years ago so maybe that’s why I hadn’t noticed.
